Journey

I love trees. For me they represent strength and the ability to bend when necessary. I chose to paint this on a wooden canvas, following the lines of the cut wood to paint the sky. It is called Journey because a tree stands tall and doesn’t apologize for what it is. Something that I have journeyed to understand. As well, as I painted the sky I felt like I was going on a journey following the lines not knowing exactly where one colour would end and where another would begin.

View From my Deck

Who doesn’t like a sunset? The prairie skies and sunsets are amazing. The colours are intense. In this painting the clouds are layered with many different colours and show the dark storm clouds rolling in.

Juxtaposition

Words are fascinating. I started toying with the idea of painting something to represent a word that I liked. Juxtaposition always made me smile so this is the result. There is black and white. Hard lines and curves. Circles and squares. Empty and full.

Autumn Marsh

I went for a walk with my family in Riding Mountain Park in Manitoba one fall day. The marsh was starting to freeze and there were bands of colour throughout the marsh. It was chilly and beautiful.

Comfort

Trees bring so much comfort in many ways. It’s the feeling of being hugged by a tree that I’m attempting to express. The branches wrap around the leaves and in turn around the viewer. It is painted on a board and follows the lines given to me by the wood. It is part of a few paintings where I want to pay homage to trees.

Watching

Ever get the feeling you’re being watched as you hike through a forest? Here we can see a few playful (?) wood nymphs. This has been painted on a wooden board, following the lines provided by the wood to create the trees and the nymphs.

Lagoon at East Beach

My happy place is at Grand Beach. In order to get to the beach you have to pass by the lagoon. It was a particularly windy day and the rushes were dancing and the water was swirling and the clouds scudded across the sky.

It’s a Blustery Day (to quote Winnie the Pooh)

Sometimes you don’t have to go very far to be inspired by the view. I looked out one of my windows on a windy day and the young Aspen tree just outside was dancing to the wind. The hope was to capture the movement of the branches and leaves on the blustery day.

Strength

This is one of the first paintings I created of a tree. The world and circumstances around you can be chaotic but strength can be found within yourself to stand strong and proud.

Beach’s Edge

Imagine standing at the edge of a lake. The water reaches the sand and slightly bubbles as it runs out of steam to go any further.

As the Assiniboine Freezes

During a walk I stood on a bridge looking out at the Assiniboine River. The edges of the river were frozen but the middle was putting up a fight! It seemed to be refusing to succumb to the cold and be tamed by the oncoming winter.

Highway 1-When the Road Stretches On and On

On my last road trip across the Prairies to British Columbia I kept driving and driving. The road didn’t have an ending but stretched on and on in this long black ribbon. All I could see was the road ahead and the dry ground on either side.

As a Puddle Freezes on Goulding Street

I often walk in my neighbourhood and see what I might paint. Each day I walked down Goulding Street and watched this particular patch of water on the sidewalk. I was fascinated by the slow ice formation on the dark patch of water. I especially liked the stage where the ice was very thin across and when I stepped on it, it shattered like glass.

Harte Trail

I often walked in Assiniboine Forest with a friend. It is an absolute gem in the middle of the city of Winnipeg and was a godsend during Covid. Harte Trail is at the southern end of the forest and the train often flies by while walking there. I tried to capture the movement of the train as it passed us by.

As Lake Devonian Thaws (FWA)

As I entered Fort Whyte Alive I drove past the lake situated on the right of the drive. It was an amazing spring morning that was bright and foggy at the same time. Some geese were gathered around where the lake had started to thaw.

Highway 1-When All You See is the Sky

This is another painting inspired by my roadtrip across the Prairies in 2021. This speaks to the amazing sky which takes up so much space in front of you as you drive. Everything else is insignificant to the blue ocean above and the clouds rolling by.
